Somedays I wonder. I wonder if I am so used to multitasking or do I have ADD? Ever felt that way?
Examples? I’ve got plenty. I’m not talking about normal mom stuff like tying a toddler’s shoe while talking on the phone and monitoring dinner at the same time. I’m talking about why can’t I watch TV – just sit there and watch TV. I can’t. I have to be doing crossword puzzles, surfing on my laptop or doing something or I will fall asleep. I am not kidding. This drives my husband crazy.
I remember in high school that I always did better during the times of the year when I was juggling 3 or 4 afterschool activities. For some reason I stayed on task best when I just didn’t have a choice. My freshman year of college was almost a disaster because I had too much free time! I couldn’t manage to get anything done and my grades reflected it. I moved back home, got a job working 30 hours a week and instantly all was back to normal.
I am the same way even now when I work. I’ll be starting my work for the day and within minutes my mind is thinking of other things I need to be doing. So I make a phone call while waiting for a page to upload to the server, and then I drop in a load of laundry, pick up some clutter along the way back to my office, check my email and get back to what I was working on. This cycle repeats itself all day long. The days I am most productive are the days when I have small blocks of time to be productive and plenty of deadlines looming over my head.
So, what do you think? ADD or do I just have an overactive brain?

Good question. I have no idea! An adult friend of mine who is ADD tells me he works on things in 15 minute increments, and even when he’s working on something, part of his brain is working on something else.
I have a friend with four children which are all are in Scouts, take music lessons, and play sports–all at the same time, two of them have some issues that require extra attention. My friend goes 100 miles an hour non-stop with volunteer activities that include holding high level offices in at least three organizations, serving as Room Mom, leading a Scout troop, etc. She has more energy in her little finger than I have in my whole body. I don’t know if she’s ADD or not, but she sure gets a lot done.
Me, I don’t even like to paint my nails while watching TV. If I’m reading, writing, watching TV, or listening to music–I’m completely focused. Housework–I’m always distracted.

I STILL don’t know that I go for the whole ADD thing. If the way your mind works is outside the ‘norm’, then you’re automatically afflicted with something.
I’m like you, though–my mind has to be engaged pretty much all the time. Not necessarily my body, but my brain is always on. It’s taken a lot to learn to ‘be still’ in my mind. Sitting in my hot tub late at night, with no lights and no noise is helping a little…I think I need to investigate some kind of meditation technique, just to be able to slow down a little.

A Little Love and A Whole Lot of Tips…
Since I didn’t party like a party animal on my Birthday on Monday (in bed with migraine), I thought I had better make up for all my losses. So this past Tuesday I went to a party, a cyber-party to celebrate 4 Successful Blogs’ first Blogday…

I function much the way you do… and I have been diagnosed with ADD. I choose not to take meds for it. I always did better when I felt pressured and HAD to do it now. I wonder now if I could have made it through college had I been diagnosed earlier. I will go back to school someday, but right now I am busy crocheting while I watch TV.
